Meet the Artist

Jesse is an American sculptural jewelry artist and teacher who has lived and worked in Mexico for 13 years. Having a mother who weaves and a father that does woodwork, Jesse started working with his hands at a very early age. He developed a deep interest for intricate metalwork during 3 internships in high school and decided to formally study jewelry and metalsmithing for 7 years. For the past 13 years, he has been teaching around the world and creating artworks with copper, silver, steel, porcelain, bark, plastic, used and repurposed materials. He also creates unique fine handmade tools and equipment that give his work distinction through delicate texture and design. Continuing to be a part of collaborative environments where teaching and learning is always present on some level is very important to him. One of his favorite quotes is “The master has failed more times than the beginner has even tried.” - Stephen McCranie. When you visit, you'll learn that in addition to being a maker, he also knows a lot about bees, loves being outside exploring or hiking in the mountains or desert where he collects natural teas for daily consumption.

Explore Burien

San Miguel de Allende is well known for its thriving art scene, cultural festivals, and baroque Spanish architecture. This town has served as a gathering place and community for artists since the 1950’s, when the United States military was offered a special option to come after the war and study at the Instituto Allende, one of the town's oldest and well known art schools. Blue skies nearly year round, the climate is fine, dry and comfortable. One of the things that always impresses Jesse about San Miguel and Mexico in general is how ingenious and clever people are about fixing things and making do. There's a culture of approaching materials with a problem solving mentality which greatly appeals to and inspires Jesse's every day jewelry work, like recycling or adapting and fitting materials to a completely new use.

Additional Details

A good time to visit Mexico is during Day of the Dead (Oct 30 to Nov. 2nd). There are also several holidays each weekend in September with fun parades to see, like during National Independence day, La Alborada, and the day of San Miguel. If you want to avoid temperatures over 30°C/86°F, the hottest and driest months are usually April and May. By June, the rains typically starts to cool things off.
