VAWAA hosts it's first-ever event with Vu Thao, textile designer and founder of high-end fashion label Kilomet 109, from Hanoi, Vietnam. Her style blends simple flattering silhouettes and sophisticated color palette with subtle touches of Vietnamese heritage. She works with several indigenous groups in the northern region of Viet Nam to source handmade fabrics, create natural dyes, and apply traditional techniques to create modern pieces. This has provided a valuable source of extra income for women in these communities and helped incentivize the preservation of fading traditions.
Her latest KHOI collection 2016 is inspired by Vietnam festival costumes. The collection blends nature motifs with sharp structures of high-performance outerwear from the 60s & 70s. Think Perfecto motorcycle jacket, hunting jackets, and the always classic "Uncle Ho" jacket. The collection incorporates two distinctive textiles from Vietnam: Calendaring Hemp from H'mong Ethnic Group and Van Silk Sheer from the Northern Delta region.
Join us in welcoming Vu Thao as she shares her collection and design process. We'll have some vino and snacks.
