Voyage on the edge of the Arctic Circle aboard a Dutch sailboat Tecla along with VAWAA master painter Linda, fjords, glaciers, Arctic foxes and humpback whales. Not suitable for persons with restricted mobility. USD 1715 (25 years+). USD 1475 (25 years or younger)

The Experience

This 7 day voyage will set sail from Isafjordur, navigating between fjords and glaciers towards Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, the main destination. The reserve is only reachable by boat and inhabited primarily by sea birds, from Razorbills to Guillemots, Kittiwakes and Fulmars. There'll be lots of walking, including hiking atop Hornbjarg and its towering bird cliffs, with sea stretching over the bay and views of the Greenland Sund.

Along the way you will –

Draw and paint on board, on land, and during the hikes at Hornstrandir under the guidance of VAWAA artist Linda.

Watch large sea mammals like finwhales, seinwhales, humpback whales and minkey whales, where the cold East Greenland current collides with the warmer water of the Irminger current (a branch of the North Atlantic Drift).

Sail through the waters of North West Iceland, made up of a diverse food chain where sperm whales are attracted to the squid feeding off the plankton; killer whales come to feed off the large number of salmon, mackerel and herring; Arctic and long tail skuwas chase the Arctic terns and Kittiwakes; puffins, guillemots and razorbills dive for the sand eels.

See old whaling factory, later transformed into a Herring processing plant and in use until the late 1940’s.

Anchor at Hesteyri, a former village settlement remaining on the banks of this shallow fjord.

Taste the best Icelandic pancakes from a former doctor's house.

Overlook the magical Westfjords with glowing purple Lupine.

Sail back to to Isafjordur.

Meet Master Painter Linda

Linda is a Dutch painter, with a fine arts background from the Rietveld Academy and the Amsterdam University of the Arts. Her projects have taken her around the world, from Spain to Czech Republic, and her travels have inspired her to now welcome the world into her own studio. One of her project includes painting every person from the 1973 Worldpress Photobook in a modern day context. As an art teacher, she is especially good at guiding people to develop their own process, removing creative blocks, and teaching what she calls “the language of art.” To her, painting and other art forms are a means of communication that hold the power to reach far beyond spoken words... no wonder her works’ central themes are inner power and positivity!
