Meet the Artist

For master weaver and textile artist Laura, the language of textile is a code. She compares the techniques of weaving to musical notes. Once you learn the notes, she says, it’s up to you how you want to play the music. Born in Milan, Laura moved to Tuscany where she fell in love with textiles and weaving. She has been living and practicing her craft in this historically creative region for thirty years.

Laura designs and produces fabrics and textile objects on hand looms. She mainly uses fine fibers and experiments with innovative techniques and materials. Laura specializes in the development and creation of custom, made-to-measure products, and gives life to small, unique collections. Practicing in the region that is the cradle of the Renaissance, Laura greatly enjoys exchanging artistic ideas and inspirations vis a vis collaborations with high fashion designers and stylists.

Laura possesses a vast knowledge of the design code, a passion for the three-dimensionality of the fabric and a vision of it as an object. Laura looks forward to welcoming guests in Tuscany, which offers inspiration at every turn. It is the perfect backdrop to lessons from Laura on the wonders of fabrics, and the art of weaving.

Explore Tuscany

Tuscany is known for its artistic history and picturesque villages brimming with culture. The air of Pisa, where Laura lives, has been thick with the creative energy of artists since the time of the Renaissance. Walk along the Arno River, passing the many medieval palaces, bridges, and buildings built along the lungarnos. Marvel at architectural masterpieces such as the sparkling Duomo of Pisa, which provided a model for the neighboring cities of Florence and Siena. Take in the paintings and sculptures from the times of the ‘early Renaissance’ and when you’re parched, sip water from the beautiful Fontana dei Putti. Treat yourself to excellent Tuscan fare from countless trattorias, and savor the infamous Tuscan wines. In Tuscany, find inspiration in every corner as Laura does, in the place that she calls "the cradle of art."

I loved Laura and my workshop with her. I didn't know anything about VAWAA or Laura beforehand and found the workshop by googling "weaving workshops/Italy" because I was traveling there and had a free week with no specific plans. I've been weaving on my own on a rigid heddle loom for a year and a half with only a one day workshop with an in-person teacher. I really wanted the experience of learni Read more
