Meet the Artist
Susana is a figurative artist with 30 years of experience painting, drawing, sculpting, and making murals. She studied fine arts and scenography, and particularly fascinated by the human figure, rhythm, and movement. One of her favorite references are the temperamental and powerful faces and attitudes from flamenco. Years ago, she even learnt tango to paint human forms more accurately.
The base of her works uses mixed techniques and materials, like plaster, paper or gold leaf. Her compositions create textures that are reminiscent of frescos and the esculptoric dimension gives the pieces strength and power. Today, her works have seen the world through private collections around Europe, America and China. When you visit, you'll be charmed by her workshop housed in an old building from the early 20th century in a small village 30 kms from Barcelona.

VAWAA Includes:
- Generating quick ideas and sketches with mud sculpture and live modeling drawing session.
- Trekking through the Garraf Natural Park, to take drawing notes.
- Learning how to prepare and frame a canvas.
- Experimenting with different materials and painting techniques.
- Defining composition and finishing the piece.
- Visiting El Mur, Hospital District, Gothic quarter, and the Romanesque-Gothic house of ancient restorative friends, who have preserved and live in that medieval environment.
- Visiting MEAM (European Museum of Modern Art), Susana's favorite museum of figurative art in Barcelona.
Stay at Susana's
Stay with Susana surrounded by nature and tranquility. Her home studio is a gorgeous, rustic townhouse built in 1928. It includes 6 nights in two bright and cozy rooms, one with a double bed and the other with two single beds. The bathroom is separate and shared. Enjoy the garden and terrace with fresh vegetation and flowers during the spring and summer, or the inspiring landscapes, while going on long walks in the fall and winter. The municipal swimming pool is accessible for a small fee from June to September.

Olesa de Bonesvalls is a beautiful village located just 30 km from the city of Barcelona and along the Penedés Comarca Wine Route in the county of Alto Penedes. Surrounded by buildings from the XII century, stay among mountains and vineyard landscapes, while remaining close to the cosmopolitan life of Barcelona— its halls, museums, bars and theaters. This is a paradise for nature lovers, cyclists, trekking lovers, and of course, wine lovers, as you'll be a short drive from Garraf’s Natural Park and among a succession of villages with rich wine tradition and wineries.
Additional Details
Barcelona is wonderful and culturally active year round, with enjoyable weather and beautiful landscapes. Regional festivals are mainly happening over the summer and beginning of fall, while local festivities in Olesa de Bonesvalls occur in July and October. Temperatures tend to be slightly cooler from December to February, although all seasons remain quite pleasant since the Mediterranean climate is mild.

Must be at least 12 years old to participate. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
The house and studio are accessible by two flights of stairs so guests must be able to walk them. You will also be around friendly cats and a shepherd dog. If you are allergic to these animals, please bring suitable medication before you arrive.

I decided to do a VAWAA with Susana as I’m a mostly self-taught artist but had fond memories of attending one-on-one classes with a local artist when I was younger, and wanted more instruction to scale up my work.
