Meet the Artist

Tom is a Swiss-born sculptor and painter based on the Greek island of Naxos, internationally recognized for his singular marble vessels and sculptural forms. He began his creative path as an airplane draftsman, where the discipline of precision and line deeply shaped his approach to sculpture. After two decades teaching art, he and his wife moved to Naxos in search of a slower, more intentional life.

Working exclusively with local Naxian marble, a luminous, coarse-grained stone quarried nearby, Tom selects each block by hand. He shapes them using diamond discs, flex tools, hand files, and sandpaper, deliberately avoiding CNC machines, acid treatments, or polish. Instead, he honors the raw vitality of the stone, leaving tool marks visible and surfaces subtly textured, allowing light to shimmer across their facets.

He often returns to the same core ideas, believing that to work seriously as an artist means to explore deeply and repeatedly. His pieces—totemic, minimal, and full of quiet rhythm—are influenced by Cycladic sculpture, modern ceramics, and the understated elegance of Hellenic form. While marble is his primary medium, Tom also works in wood and has created collaborative installations using humble, found materials.

The rhythms of island life, the wind, and the sun infuse his practice with a quiet sense of place. Tom now invites you into his breezy, open-air atelier to explore the timeless craft of marble carving and uncover something ancient in the stone—and in yourself.

Explore Naxos

Naxos is a soulful, lesser-known gem tucked in the heart of the Cyclades. Larger and lusher than its neighbors Santorini and Mykonos, it offers a more grounded, authentic rhythm. Whitewashed alleyways in Chora (the main town) spiral around a Venetian castle, locals sip coffee beneath plane trees, and donkeys still carry firewood up winding stone paths.

According to legend, this is where Dionysus, god of wine and ecstasy, fell in love with Ariadne. Traces of ancient worship and classical grandeur remain, most famously in the unfinished marble Portara, a monumental temple doorway that stands sentinel above the sea. Naxos has been famed for its 3,500-year-old marble tradition, used in some of Greece’s most iconic sculptures. Even today, artisans carve by hand in hilltop villages like Apeiranthos and Kinidaros.

The island is also known for its earthy, seasonal cuisine, featuring cheeses, citrus liqueurs, olive oil, and famously, its potatoes. More than just a destination, Naxos invites you to slow down and settle in. Not merely to sightsee, but to feel part of something enduring.

Additional Details

Naxos is a wonderful destination year-round, with especially vibrant celebrations during Carnival in February, Easter holidays in April, and National Day in March. For a more tranquil experience, visiting outside the busy summer months of July and August offers pleasant weather and fewer crowds. Winter (January–February), while sometimes rainy, brings a peaceful atmosphere perfect for quiet exploration.
