Applied Art and Design in the Film Industry

Live from Philadelphia, United States

Ever wonder who creates the paintings and props we see in films? Who designs the sets? How does the art department fit in the puzzle of a film production?

On Thursday, July 30, at 12 PM EDT, join VAWAA Artist Clarissa, a career artist and two-decade veteran of the film industry, for an informational presentation about the many different roles of artists and craftspeople in this industry. Through a visual slideshow, some fun, behind-the-scenes anecdotes, and an enthusiastic journey through the working of a film production, this talk will look at what a production crew is made up of, who does what, and how the Art Department contributes to the final production. And finally, some resources for those thinking of heading that way.

Come join in and youll never see films the same way again! No prior experience required, all levels welcome.

About Clarissa

Clarissa is a fine artist with a background of almost twenty years working in the film industry as a scenic artist. In fact, the cover image you see is from Boardwalk Empire, a production and set that she worked on! She studied film and fine arts in art school, university, and through many studios around New York. Her paintings are largely inspired by cinematography, photography and other issues of filmmaking, which examines all the ways that elements of film pertain to painting - composition, visual cues, symbolic use of color, lighting/value.

Clarissa’s work embodies the same spirit of visual storytelling, and she loves nothing more than talking about film and pop culture and how it relates to art history.
