Weaving Yarn Mandalas

Live from Majorca, Spain

Come and discover the colorful world of mandala weaving with VAWAA artist Cloë who hand weaves custom mandalas using luxurious and natural yarns from fair trade cooperations. Each mandala reflects a personal story from someone. May it be their dream, their life story or something that inspires them.

On Sunday, January 17th, 11 AM EST Cloë will guide us through the basics of mandala weaving using 3 different patterns to create a 20cm mandala with 4 sticks and our own selection of yarn. A seasoned traveler, she will begin with an illuminating introduction to its ancient cultural origins, mystical purposes, and possible materials and applications. You’ll be invited to enjoy a moment of stillness and introspection, before finding self expression in colour and form. With a few simple techniques you will be able to create an infinite variety of patterns.

This can be a wonderful meditative practice to help (re)connect with your source of happiness or mindful intention. You’ll leave the session with a beautiful mandala manifesting peace for the year ahead.

All levels are welcome and there is no prior experience required. There will be plenty of time to share, get feedback and meet other participants from around the world.

Joining us from a different time zone? Be sure to convert the time.

What you'll need

  • 4 wooden sticks 20-25 cm (7.8 - 9.8 inch) long and 5-7 mm (0.2 - 0.27 inch) thick. Available in any dollar store, creative shop or homegoods store. It is fine if your sticks do not meet the exact measurements. If you can't go to a shop, you can improvise and use tree branches (these are harder to practice on).

  • 3 to 7 different colors of yarn. Knitting yarn, acrylic or wool of medium weight suitable for knitting needle 5 mm, US - 8, are recommended (see label). The yarns do not need to be of equal thickness. Very thin or very bulky yarns won't work very well.

  • Any liquid crafts glue

  • Scissors

  • Optional: ruler and marker

  • Notebook and pen to take notes

How to join

We'll be hosting this VAWAA online on Zoom. You'll receive link and details to join via email a few hours before it begins. We recommend having all the materials ready before the session.

About Cloë

Cloë weaves mandalas by hand using natural yarns. She loves to observe geometrical shapes unfold as she places thread after thread on a wooden frame. Her home studio is in a protected nature reserve in the oldest part of Majorca Island, overlooking Balearic Sea. These vivid colors of nature are her greatest inspirations as seen in her brightly colored mandalas. Having traveled extensively to remote and tribal places since childhood, she also draws inspiration from indigenous cultures, ancient symbols and sacred art. Only a personality as lively and luminous like her can create mandalas that convey the magnificent glow of nature. Shine on!
