Primitive Printmaking and Playing with Textures

On Saturday, June 27, at 1:30 PM EDT, join VAWAA Artist and Spanish printmaker Roser for a fun session on frottage techniques. Frottage is an ancient primitive way to print, known as the earliest form of printmaking. The process involves transferring a design on paper by rubbing over a textured object placed underneath. These prints can be used as is, or you can use this technique on top of an existing artwork or as a background for another piece of art.

During the 75 minutes, we'll learn how to use this technique and play with different textured surfaces or simple objects found at home. By varying strength, length, and colors, you'll quickly realize that options are limitless which makes it a nice way to print! We'll also learn a non toxic process of preparing water-washable inks, and anyone with plates will have an opportunity to practice woodcut printing. No prior experience required, all levels welcome!

Joining us from a different time zone? Be sure to convert the time.

About Roser

Roser is a printmaker whose drawings and prints have taken her across the United Kingdom, Spain and the United States. She is fascinated with found objects in the natural world and uses them to create work that celebrates the sublime of the everyday and intimate moments when everything is still. Besides her admiration for both romanticism and environmentalism, she is also a fan of medieval artists such as Giotto and Lorenzetti. When you visit, be prepared to be charmed by her warmth, historic studio space, artistic neighborhood and her love for cherry blossoms.

"Roser was a wonderful teacher. She walked us through every step of the print making process and tailored our experience so that our two girls (6 and 11) could easily pick it up and enjoy the experience as much as the adults did." - Jenn

Sessions are ticketed to support artists, makers and our small team. If you’re experiencing financial hardship, please reach out. We may have a generous participant who has paid it forward and would ask that you pay the love forward by sharing online sessions with 3 new friends.
