Steve & Pamela & Rosemary

United States > > > with Macrina in Mexico

We were transported and welcomed into the lives of these talented and hardworking Zapotec women. Their good humor shone through working every day. To the only male within the compound, the women humorously gave Steve the title of “the blessed one.” He worked alongside the women and wore his floral apron proudly. It is remarkable how warmly our hosts welcome visitors into their community. They are open, generous, and eager to share their families, meals, experiences, laughter, and stories, as well as their craft. Much to our delight, the final day of our experience concluded with the 84th birthday celebration for Macrina’s teacher, her mother, and was attended by the extended family. We left filled with awe and deep gratitude for this cultural immersion.

In a world of growing tourism, often accompanied by cultural appropriation, this experience was an unforgettable rare gift and beyond what we could have imagined. We will treasure our pottery VAWAA forever, would happily repeat, and would wholeheartedly recommend it.
