Meet the Artist

Almudena is a fashion designer specializing in millinery with over 22 years of experience in London and Bilbao. She spent her childhood years growing up in a fabric store with a refined clientele, surrounded by dressmakers, fashion magazines, fittings, and fantasy. Her grandmother was often called the “Balenciaga of uniforms.” This enchanted upbringing inspired her career in fashion and incredible attention to detail.

Almudena’s fascination with hat-making began during her years designing theater costumes. She makes her own hat blocks, hand-made dyes and floral embellishments. There is a sense of wonder in her work; her designs are infused with whimsical sophistication. The care and joy she puts into every element is undeniable. She loves to spend time in the fields, finding and collecting different flowers and leaves to be carefully dried, painted, and used in her pieces. In a world consumed by fast fashion, Almudena embraces the slow, time-tested approach to millinery and is mindful of fashion’s environmental footprint. In addition to hat-making she also creates collections of upcycled accessories, giving new life to haute couture textiles that would have otherwise been discarded in the hopes of supporting a circular, more sustainable economy. When you meet her, you'll instantly feel a sense of playfulness and experimentation that runs through her life and work.

Explore Bilbao

Almudena's studio is in the center of Bilbao and just 20 minutes from the coast. Surrounded by beautiful green mountains and the cliff-lined Bay of Biscay, Bilbao is home to many architectural gems and a thriving gastronomic scene. It’s the largest city in Basque country, a fiercely independent region with a deep-rooted history as well as the oldest language in Europe.

A cultural hub for art and design, Bilbao blends the cosmopolitan feel of a European city with an unmistakable regional culture that stays with you long after you've left. Step into a well-worn neighborhood bar for pintxos and enjoy bites of fresh local sardines and tiny sandwiches of jamón Ibérico. Wander the manicured gardens of Doña Casilda Park and the ancient pedestrian-only Casco Viejo district, and you will feel the vibrant energy of Basque day-to-day life.
