This was my fourth VAWAA, and quite possibly it was the best. I’m a keen watercolourist, but I feared I was becoming a bit precious and fiddly. I thought learning how to do mosaic might get me thinking more in blocks of colour. I was certainly not disappointed. I’d already done a watercolour of a tuna, and I started on a mosaic based on that. I got it finished before either I, or Victor, expected. So I thought I’d try to make a friend for the tuna and the following day I did a king prawn, which was a bit better. Then after that I did a gecko house sign which I love. I was improving my technique … seeing more possibilities… all the time. I could not have done it without Victor, who was quite simply one of the best teachers I’ve ever come across. He was ever-vigilant; but I never once felt he was ‘cramping my style’, interfering, or taking over.
